"And somehow the sea was always there to make you feel stupid"
-David Berman
“Souvenirs of Reflection connect me to the fantasies of a collective familial past. This work considers the souvenir’s capacity to elicit longing for a childhood that cannot be re-lived. It commemorates ambiguous, mythical histories pieced together from popular childhood iconography, recollections, family stories, and photographs. Luminescent and hidden elements allude to the idealizations and constructed narratives that occur when the body is separated from the past. Souvenirs of Reflection recall and authenticate the magic of childhood – they are built upon nostalgia while simultaneously generating it. They encourage wearers and viewers to connect with their own fuzzy memories or surreal imaginings and enjoy the illusion.”
